Check availabilityWhy Drenthe
Drenthe has more than 1,200 kilometres of cycle paths. In a large survey of leisure cyclists by the Dutch motoring club ANWB, Drenthe scored highest of all provinces: 8.5 out of 10.
Distances are short and the landscape changes quickly: in one day you ride through the Dwingelderveld, past a dolmen and through a village with a café on the green.
Example: three days of cycling
Day 1: Dwingelderveld
From Ruinen (De Marke) 6.6 km to the visitor centre, then the main route of about 30 km across the heath, past fens and the Dwingeloo radio telescope.
Day 2: Havelte dolmens
About 16 km to the Havelterberg with dolmen D53, one of the largest in the Netherlands. About 32 km return, with plenty of time for lunch on the way.
Day 3: Echten and Zuidwolde
From Hoogeveen, the Echtenerroute past the Echtenerzand drift sands, the Hoogeveense Vaart and the moated Huis te Echten. Or the Van Gogh route of about 50 km from Hoogeveen station.
