Boswachterij Ruinen (Ruinen forest) and the Echtense bos
MTB route Ruinen
The route closest to our Ruinen location. Flat, but surprisingly playful: wide paths keep alternating with purpose-built singletrack through the pine forest.
Please note: From 19 October 2026 Staatsbosbeheer will be felling trees in the Echtense bos. For a few weeks the route will then be largely closed, mainly on the northern side, with a signposted diversion.
What to expect
- Flat, with hardly any climbing
- Lots of short singletrack sections between wide forest paths
- Not demanding, and very doable with children
Along the way
- Pine forest from the 1930s, originally planted for mine timber
- The Gijsselter Plassen lakes and the Echtenerzand
- Patches of heathland along the way
Start and getting there
Start: Buitencentrum De Poort (Kloosterstraat 12, Ruinen), 't Boshuys Echten or Vakantiepark Westerbergen.
From Hoogeveen: about 7 km, just under half an hour by bike.
From Ruinen: the route passes about 100 metres from De Marke, so you can ride straight onto it.
